Day 43

Saturday we went to the Omaha Zoo. It was great! It is pretty big and has a lot of animals. The habitats were pretty big too so it didn't look like any of the animals were going crazy or anything. We had a lot of fun looking at the animals and checking out the exhibits.

I have never seen so many gorillas in one zoo before! At fist I only saw two, which I thought was kinda a lot, and then I noticed there was at least ten. The cool thing is that they had a lot of space, they weren't crammed in to the habitats with no room to move. One of the information signs by their habitats said that the young males had fun rushing the windows and scaring the people. I was kinda hoping that it would happen but they were tired that day I guess.

We spent most of our time by the monkeys. I was a lot of fun watching how easily they swung around. I hadn't noticed before that they had thumbs on their feet. It makes sense though because they have to be able to grip things securely. We got to watch one of the employees feed the orangutans. It was interesting that they had been trained to climb up the netting and stick out their hands for food. It was also super cute.

We checked out the desert dome, which was really cool, part of the exhibit was different kinds of snakes that you would find in desert areas. Tom felt the need to tease the rattlesnake...I think the point was to try to get it to follow his hand.

Another fun part was the cat house. The had so many tigers! Orange ones and white ones. Some of them weren't sleeping and it was interesting watching them move about. They are so graceful and they look peaceful, like a domestic cat.

Another fun part was the jungle portion. I liked this part a lot because of all the trees and plants that the incorporated into the exhibit. It seems like these people want to make the exhibits as close to the places that they are trying to mimic as they can. Yeah the rope bridge was scary. About halfway through water from the water fall nearby was spraying on it making it slimy and slippery.
I just wanted a picture of me in the jungle. This is probably the closest I am ever going to get to a real jungle so I wanted to make the most of it :)
Okay, the reason I included this picture is the story behind it. As we were walking through the "jungle" I noticed a few groups off by the big trees rearranging children for a group picture. I then noticed the there were semi private opening along the path by the big trees. I wanted to get a good kissing picture of us but didn't want to stop in the middle of the path to kiss my husband in front of strangers. So next time we came to one of the  openings I asked if we could go in to take a picture. He said "sure." So we went in and sat on a fake log and just as I was getting ready to take the picture a group of people came by. No biggy, right? Well a girl about 13ish came over and just stood there and watched us as I took the picture. I was trying to go fast because Tom is not a huge fan of posed pictures and because she was just standing there staring at us. It was weird and creepy. As soon as I was finished taking the picture she walked away and rejoined her group. What the heck?

Another fun part, although kinda scary, was the Skyfari. I was a ski lift that takes you over the African animal exhibits. I was pretty cool being taller that the giraffes. I was also nice not having to jockey for a space by the animals.

Were nearing closing time so after the Skyfari we started heading back to the gate.As we were heading back we came across the railroad tracks.

Its in my genes, I had to cross the tracks. Multiple times.

On the way home we stopped at a mexican restaurant in Columbus. It was really good. We will be going back :)

I was really tired on the way back to our apartment. I was struggling to stay awake. I hadn't slept almost at all the night before and we got up early to go to the zoo. Well when we got home I went into our room and changed into pajamas and got comfortable with the intention of falling asleep on the couch watching a movie with Tom. When I came out of our room Tom asks me "hey, so could you give me a haircut?" I tried to explain to him that I was too tired to give him a hair cut but he really needed one. So I went into the bathroom and got the buzzer thing out. I also got the number 2 and 3 guards out. 3 goes on the top and 2 goes on the sides. I went to put the 3 on the buzzer thing and then "realized" that I had the wrong one. I put the 2 on and started cutting his hair. "Wow" I said "your hair is cutting funny tonight." After I finished with the top I I took off the 2 and went to get the other one. That is when I realized that I had messed up. I told tom and he sighed and said "I guess you'll just have to used the 1 on the sides." I said "okay" rooted out the 1. I should have just finished his head with the 2...

After all of this we watched movies and went to bed.

  1. One time after I had taken the guard off to trim up Pat's neck line, he went back to fix a spot he had missed on top (forgetting to put a guard on) and shaved to his scalp. The poor guy had to bic his head that night!! It was hysterical watching him cover his head in shaving cream and bust out a razor. And, he definitely looked like he had just busted out of prison too... LOL.
